What should you know about Freenome liquid biopsy?

A blood sample can be analysed for material released by abnormal cells, such as circulating tumour DNA. The test may support assessment or monitoring, depending on the specific test and clinical situation. A detected signal does not by itself identify the cancer's location, while an undetected signal cannot exclude every cancer.

A liquid biopsy differs from a tissue biopsy. Tissue sampling can show the cells and their structure directly, while blood testing samples signals circulating in the bloodstream. Your clinician decides whether either test, or both, fits the question being asked.

Ask what the test is intended to answer, which cancers or signals it assesses, how the sample is handled, and when results will be discussed. Provide your symptoms, previous diagnoses, scan reports, medicines, and relevant family history. Keep planned imaging, examination, or tissue testing unless your clinician changes the plan.

A result should lead to a documented next step rather than an isolated conclusion. Ask whether confirmation is needed and what finding would change treatment.
