What should you know about free tetanus shot?

Tetanus is caused by a toxin made by bacteria that can enter through broken skin, especially a deep, dirty, puncture, crush, or burn wound. It does not spread from person to person. Protection comes from vaccination, but immunity can fade and some injuries need additional prevention. Rinse the wound with clean running water, remove visible dirt gently, and cover it with a clean dressing. Do not seal a deep or contaminated wound yourself. Antibiotics are not a substitute for wound care or vaccination, and a shot should be given by an appropriate healthcare professional.

Seek urgent care for a deep puncture, uncontrolled bleeding, a wound from an animal or dirty object, a severe burn or crush injury, spreading redness, pus, fever, or loss of movement or feeling. Jaw stiffness, trouble swallowing, painful muscle tightening, or breathing difficulty are emergencies because they can be signs of tetanus or another serious problem.
