What should you know about free MRI second opinion?

A second opinion is an independent review of the scan, the written radiology report, and the clinical question that led to imaging. The reviewing clinician may agree with the first interpretation, clarify an uncertain finding, or suggest that additional imaging or a different test is needed.

Ask whether the reviewer has access to the original image files rather than only screenshots. A report can be useful, but the images, comparison scans, symptoms, examination findings, and previous treatment all affect interpretation. Digital pathology is a separate way of reviewing tissue samples, not a substitute for MRI review.

Collect the MRI report, image files or portal access, referral details, relevant symptoms, medication list, and earlier scans. Write down when the problem began and what has changed. Check who will review the material, what is included in the free service, how questions are answered, and whether a formal consultation is available if the scan raises concern.

Do not delay an arranged appointment or treatment while waiting for an informal review. If the second opinion changes the suggested plan, ask the treating team to compare both interpretations and explain the reason for the difference.

Seek urgent medical help for new weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, severe breathing difficulty, sudden confusion, a seizure, or rapidly worsening pain. These symptoms need assessment based on their urgency, whether or not an MRI second opinion is pending.

What clinical question should the MRI answer? Which images and earlier scans should be reviewed? Does the finding explain my symptoms? Would another scan, tissue biopsy, or examination change the plan? How long is it safe to wait for a review?
