What should you know about a free brain MRI second opinion?

A specialist may reassess the MRI sequences, compare earlier scans, and check whether the described location, size, and appearance match the clinical question. The review can help explain whether an abnormal area needs monitoring, more imaging, tissue sampling, or treatment. It may also identify information that was difficult to see on the first reading.

MRI review is not the same as a new scan and cannot answer every question. Symptoms, examination findings, prior cancer history, and the original images all matter. A scan alone may not distinguish tumour from inflammation, treatment change, bleeding, or another process. A radiology opinion also does not replace urgent assessment when neurological symptoms are changing.

Collect the original image files, not only screenshots, along with the radiology report, clinic letters, previous scans, and a current medicine list. Ask whether the reviewing specialist has experience with brain tumours and whether the service includes a written report or a discussion with your treating team. Clarify what ‘free’ includes, because image review, consultation, new imaging, and treatment are separate services.

Do not wait for a second opinion if you develop a seizure, sudden weakness or numbness, new trouble speaking, severe escalating headache, repeated vomiting, confusion, or reduced alertness. Seek emergency care for sudden neurological change. A scheduled scan review is appropriate for clarification, not for delaying urgent treatment.
