What should you know about fracture plaster of Paris?

Plaster of Paris is applied as wet layers that harden around padding and create a supportive shell. It limits movement so the injured area can rest in the position chosen by the clinician. A fresh cast may feel warm while setting, and swelling can make the limb feel tight during the early period. A cast is not the same as a diagnosis: the fracture pattern and swelling determine the support required. Plaster may be used for arms, legs and other body areas.

Keep the cast dry unless your care team gives different instructions, and never insert objects inside it to scratch. Elevate the limb and move uncovered fingers or toes gently to reduce stiffness. Do not trim, crack or reshape the cast yourself. Protect its edges and check the skin around them for rubbing. Follow the appointment plan and activity restrictions. Contact urgent care for worsening tightness, severe or increasing pain, numbness, tingling, unusual coldness, or fingers or toes that look pale or blue. Seek help for a wet, broken, foul-smelling or soaked cast, or for new swelling that does not improve with elevation. Fever, drainage or escalating skin pain beneath the cast also needs assessment.

Ask how long the cast is expected to stay on, how much weight or movement is allowed, how to bathe safely, and which changes mean it needs adjustment. Ask when the fracture will be checked and how stiffness will be managed after removal.
