What should you know about fowl typhoid vaccination?

Fowl typhoid is a poultry disease and is different from typhoid fever in people. Vaccination aims to reduce disease risk in suitable birds, but it does not diagnose or treat a bird that is already ill. A flock plan also considers housing, movement, feed and water hygiene, separation of sick birds, and safe handling of carcasses. Vaccine suitability can depend on bird health and the product used.

Give the veterinarian a clear history of previous illness, flock movements, and earlier vaccines. Follow the product directions for storage, preparation, administration, and record keeping. Do not vaccinate visibly ill birds unless instructed. Keep clean equipment available, minimise unnecessary handling, and continue the biosecurity measures recommended for the flock. If anyone develops fever, diarrhoea, or marked weakness after animal contact, that person should seek medical advice rather than using poultry products.

Ask for urgent veterinary help if several birds become ill, deaths are unexpected, or a bird is unable to stand, drink, or breathe normally. Vaccination should not delay investigation of an active outbreak. For a person, urgent care is appropriate for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, very little urine, blood in stool, or inability to keep fluids down. These warning signs may signal serious illness or dehydration.

Ask which vaccine is appropriate, whether the flock is well enough, how it should be stored, and when further doses or review are needed. Confirm any restrictions involving eggs or meat. If you are ill, describe the animal contact and ask whether your symptoms could represent typhoid fever or another condition.
