What should you know about forearm sprain symptoms?

Short answer
Forearm sprain symptoms can include pain, tenderness, swelling, bruising, and reduced movement after a ligament is overstretched or torn.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical trigger
- A twist, fall, collision, or forceful movement
- Possible signs
- Pain, swelling, bruising, tenderness, and reduced movement
- Key caution
- Trauma-related symptoms may need assessment to exclude fracture
Recognising a possible sprain
A sprain often follows a twist, fall, collision, or forceful movement. Pain may increase when the nearby joint is loaded or moved, and bruising can appear later. A mild injury may allow movement with soreness, while a more substantial injury can cause marked weakness or instability. Forearm pain after trauma can also come from a fracture or tendon injury, so symptoms alone cannot confirm a sprain.
Early care
Protect the arm from the movement that caused the pain and keep it supported in a comfortable position. Cold wrapped in cloth may help swelling during short applications. Elevate the arm when resting if it is swollen, and move the fingers gently to avoid unnecessary stiffness. Do not massage a newly swollen area or return to lifting because the pain briefly improves. A clinician may recommend splinting, physiotherapy, or carefully applied kinesiology taping depending on the examination.
When to seek care
Seek urgent assessment after a significant injury if the forearm looks deformed, pain is severe, or you cannot move the wrist, elbow, or fingers normally. Prompt care is also needed for numbness, weakness, a cold or discoloured hand, rapidly increasing swelling, or severe pain with tightness. Arrange review when bruising, tenderness, or restricted movement is not settling.
Questions for your doctor
Could this be a sprain, fracture, or tendon injury? Is imaging needed? Should I use a splint, and for how long? Which movements are safe while it heals?

Questions people ask
Can a sprain cause bruising?
Yes. Small blood vessels can be disrupted when tissues are injured, so bruising may develop around the painful area or appear after some time.
Should I stretch a painful forearm?
Avoid forceful stretching early on. Gentle movement within comfort is usually more appropriate until the injury has been assessed or symptoms are clearly improving.
