Short answer

Forearm pain with swelling may follow an injury or irritated tendon, but rapid or severe swelling needs prompt medical assessment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Possible explanations

Swelling after a knock, fall, or sudden load can reflect bruising, a sprain, or a more significant injury. Repeated gripping, wrist movement, or lifting may irritate the tendons near the elbow and forearm. Golfer's Elbow affects tissues on the inner elbow, while Tennis Elbow affects tissues on the outer elbow; either can cause pain that travels into the forearm. Infection, a blood-vessel problem, or a fracture is less common but needs medical attention. Compare both arms without pressing hard, and notice whether the skin is hot, red, bruised, or unusually tense.

What you can do now

Rest from lifting and repetitive gripping, raise the arm when comfortable, and use a wrapped cold pack briefly at a time during the early phase of a minor injury. Keep the fingers moving gently so they do not become stiff, but avoid forceful stretching over swollen tissue. Remove tight rings or bracelets. A clinician can decide whether you need an examination, X-ray, or treatment for a tendon or joint problem. Medicines are safest when chosen with advice that considers your health and other medicines.

Warning signs

Get urgent help if swelling increases quickly, the forearm feels very tight, pain is severe or out of proportion, or the hand becomes cold, pale, blue, numb, or weak. Seek prompt care for fever with redness or warmth, pus, or a wound. After a fall or blow, an altered shape or inability to use the wrist or fingers may signal a fracture.

Questions to bring

Could this be a tendon irritation, sprain, or fracture? What movements should I pause, and when can I resume them? How should I monitor the swelling? Would physiotherapy or imaging help?

Questions people ask

Is swelling after exercise always serious?

Not always. Mild soreness can follow unfamiliar use, but persistent, worsening, hot, or rapidly developing swelling deserves assessment.

Can elbow tendon problems cause forearm swelling?

They can cause local tenderness and sometimes a sense of fullness, although marked or spreading swelling should be checked.
