Forearm pain and bruising: what to know

Short answer
Forearm pain with bruising often follows a knock or soft-tissue injury, but spreading swelling, deformity, or weakness needs prompt assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common context
- A knock, fall, forceful exercise, or soft-tissue strain
- Urgent clue
- Increasing tight swelling with numbness, weakness, or a cold hand
What bruising can show
Bruising happens when small blood vessels leak beneath the skin, often after an impact, a fall, forceful exercise, or a muscle strain. Pain may come from the same soft-tissue injury, although a fracture, tendon injury, or less commonly a bleeding problem can look similar at first. The colour can change as the bruise settles, and the visible mark may extend beyond the most tender spot. Forearm pain itself does not identify its cause. Repeated bruises without a clear injury, especially with other bleeding symptoms, deserve medical review.
Early care
Protect the arm from further knocks and avoid heavy lifting or forceful gripping. Rest it in a comfortable position and use a cool pack wrapped in cloth for short intervals during the early period. Do not massage a newly bruised area or apply strong pressure if swelling is increasing. Keep the fingers moving gently if this is comfortable, and remove rings before swelling develops. Do not self-start medicines that affect clotting without checking with a clinician, particularly if you bruise easily or take prescribed medication.
When it is urgent
Get urgent care for severe or rapidly increasing pain, a tight swollen forearm, numbness, a pale or cold hand, inability to move the fingers, or major loss of grip. Assessment is also needed after a significant fall or direct blow if the arm is misshapen or movement is very limited. Arrange a routine appointment for unexplained or repeated bruising, bruising in several places, or symptoms that are not improving.
Questions for an appointment
Ask whether you need imaging, how much activity is safe, and whether any medicines or health conditions could be contributing to bruising. Explain when the mark appeared, what caused it, how it has changed, and whether you have nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or other new bruises.
