Short answer

Forearm golf pain commonly follows repeated gripping or swing loads that irritate muscles, tendons, or the elbow attachments.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical load
Grip pressure, forearm rotation, wrist control, and repeated impact
Useful observation
Note whether pain begins during the swing or after practice
Return principle
Restart with comfortable, lower-load practice and build gradually

Why golf can trigger forearm pain

A golf swing combines a firm grip, wrist control, forearm rotation, and a fast change in force. Symptoms may appear after a long practice session, a change in clubs, or a return to golf after time away. Pain on the inner elbow and palm-side forearm can fit golfer’s elbow, where the flexor tendon area is overloaded. Outer-elbow pain may fit tennis elbow even when golf is the activity. These patterns overlap, so location and examination matter.

Pain that starts during impact may also reflect a mishit, altered swing mechanics, or a grip that is too tight. Record whether symptoms occur during the backswing, at impact, afterward, or during everyday tasks such as opening a jar.

How to calm it down

Pause full-power swings and painful practice drills while symptoms are active. Use shorter sessions, a relaxed grip, adequate rest between swings, and a gradual return rather than testing the pain repeatedly. Gentle wrist and forearm movement can prevent stiffness. Once daily activities are comfortable, a clinician can prescribe progressive loading for the wrist, forearm, and shoulder and review technique or equipment. Do not play through sharp pain or compensate by changing your whole arm motion.

When an assessment is needed

Book an assessment if pain interferes with dressing, lifting, or sleep, keeps returning each time you golf, or is not improving after reducing the load. Seek prompt care after a fall, direct blow, sudden snap, substantial swelling, or loss of grip strength. Numbness, a cold or discoloured hand, or severe rapidly worsening pain warrants urgent evaluation.

Useful questions to ask

Is the pain coming from the inner elbow, outer elbow, wrist, or a nerve? When can I resume putting, short shots, and full swings? Which strengthening exercises suit my current symptoms? Should my grip, club setup, or swing be reviewed?

Questions people ask

Does golf-related forearm pain always mean golfer’s elbow?

No. Golfer’s elbow is one possible pattern; muscle strain, wrist problems, outer-elbow irritation, and nerve symptoms can feel similar.

Can I keep golfing with mild forearm pain?

Continuing full-power swings can prolong irritation. Reduce the provoking load and get advice if symptoms persist or affect your technique.
