What should you know about for pimples and dark spots?

A pimple triggers inflammation. As it settles, the skin may produce extra pigment at that site, leaving a brown or grey mark called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The mark is flat, while an active pimple may be raised, tender or filled with fluid.

Not every dark patch comes from acne. Melasma, sun spots and tinea versicolor can have different patterns and treatments. If patches are itchy, scaly, rapidly changing or appearing without pimples, an assessment can prevent the wrong product from worsening the problem.

Wash gently, avoid squeezing, and choose non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen. Consistent sun protection helps stop existing marks becoming darker. Introduce one acne or pigment product at a time, patch-test when possible and stop if burning, swelling or a spreading rash develops.

A clinician can tailor treatment to active acne and skin tone. Options may include chemical peel, skin brightening treatment or picosecond laser treatment for selected pigment concerns, but procedures should wait until the cause and skin sensitivity are clear.

Arrange a review for painful deep spots, frequent breakouts, scarring, widespread dark patches or marks that continue appearing despite gentle care. Seek prompt help for sudden swelling, severe skin pain, pus with fever or a rapidly changing pigmented area. Early acne treatment can reduce further inflammation and marking.
