Short answer

Foot heat rash occurs when sweat and warmth irritate or obstruct the skin’s surface, causing itchy bumps, prickling, redness or small blisters.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Common setting
Warm, humid conditions or sweaty, enclosed footwear.
First measure
Cool the skin and reduce trapped moisture.

How heat rash appears

A foot heat rash is more likely after hot weather, exercise, tight footwear or socks that hold moisture against the skin. The rash may look like clusters of tiny bumps or a patch of skin redness, with prickling or itch. It can affect the top of the foot, ankle or areas pressed by straps. Similar-looking skin bumps may come from contact irritation, infection or another inflammatory rash, so persistence or an unusual pattern needs assessment.

Cooling and calming measures

Move to a cooler environment, remove damp socks and rinse gently with cool or lukewarm water. Pat dry, wear loose breathable footwear and change socks when sweaty. Avoid thick occlusive creams, fragranced products and scratching while the skin is hot. Emollient therapy may help once the skin is dry and irritated rather than actively sweaty. A clinician may recommend topical corticosteroids for selected inflammatory rashes.

When to seek care

Arrange medical advice if the rash does not settle after cooling and reducing moisture, keeps returning, spreads or develops scaling, discharge or open skin. Prompt care is appropriate for marked pain, warmth, swelling, pus, fever or rapidly worsening redness. A clinician can distinguish heat rash from infection, allergy or another cause and match treatment to the diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Does this look like heat rash or another skin rash? Could my footwear, sock fabric or product be trapping sweat or irritating me? Should I use an emollient or a prescribed topical corticosteroid? What changes should prompt a review?
