Foot and Palm Itching: What to Know

Contact dermatitis may follow exposure to soaps, gloves, footwear materials, adhesives, or cleaning products. Atopic dermatitis and asteatotic eczema can leave skin dry, rough, and itchy. Small fluid-filled blisters on the sides of fingers, palms, toes, or soles can occur with dyshidrotic eczema.

Scaling between toes can fit a fungal infection, while psoriasis may produce well-defined thickened or scaly areas. Scabies often causes intense itch with bumps and may affect close contacts. Hives usually appear as raised, changing welts rather than fixed dry patches.

Use lukewarm water, a fragrance-free cleanser, and a plain moisturiser after washing. Keep feet dry, change damp socks, and pause any newly introduced product that touches the itchy area. Try not to scratch; short nails and a cool compress can reduce skin damage while you arrange advice.

Treatment depends on the cause. A clinician may recommend a topical anti-inflammatory for eczema or contact dermatitis, antifungal treatment for a fungal pattern, or a different plan for scabies, psoriasis, hives, or yeast infection. Avoid applying several medicated creams at once without guidance because they can change the appearance.

Seek urgent help if itching comes with swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing trouble, faintness, or widespread blistering. Arrange medical review for painful cracks, pus, fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe night-time itch, or itching that persists despite removing an obvious irritant. Mention household members with similar symptoms.

Ask what the distribution and surface changes suggest, whether a skin scraping or other test is useful, and which products should be stopped. Tell the clinician about new medicines, travel, contacts with similar itching, and any history of eczema, psoriasis, or allergies.
