Foot and Hand Itching

Dry, cracked skin often feels tight and itchy, while contact dermatitis may follow soaps, gloves, footwear, adhesives, or cleaning products. Atopic dermatitis can cause recurring itch and inflamed skin. Scaly areas between the toes or on the palms may point toward an infection, while thickened plaques can occur with psoriasis. Raised, changing welts are more consistent with hives; intense night itching affecting household contacts raises concern for scabies.

The same symptom can have different causes. Note whether both sides are affected, whether blisters, scale, cracks, or swelling are present, and whether a new product or activity preceded the flare.

Wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, pat dry, and apply a plain moisturiser soon afterward. Wear breathable footwear and change damp socks; avoid scratching, harsh scrubbing, and products that sting. Do not share towels or footwear if an infection or scabies is possible. A pharmacist or clinician can guide treatment after seeing the pattern, since steroid creams may worsen some infections.

Seek prompt help for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, severe swelling, fever, or significant pain. Get urgent care for itching with lip or tongue swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, or widespread blistering. Arrange a review if symptoms persist, recur, disturb sleep, or involve cracks that do not heal, especially if you have diabetes or reduced immunity.

Ask whether the appearance fits contact dermatitis, eczema, infection, scabies, hives, or psoriasis; which products should be stopped; and whether a scraping or other test is needed. Mention new medicines, travel, household itching, and any exposures involving hands or feet.
