- Fried, spicy, rich foods and strong smells
What can you eat when you feel nauseated?
Small amounts of bland, low-fat food and frequent sips of fluid may be easier to tolerate when nausea reduces your appetite. Try plain crackers, toast, rice, bananas, potatoes, or clear soup. Eat slowly, stop before you feel full, and choose the foods that your stomach accepts rather than forcing a meal.
Why food choices can matter
Nausea can make strong smells, rich meals, and a very full stomach feel worse. Cool or room-temperature foods may have less aroma than hot food. Fatty, fried, spicy, or heavily seasoned dishes can be harder to tolerate for some people, while an empty stomach can also intensify queasiness. Nausea may occur with problems such as acid reflux, food poisoning, gastritis, or gastroenteritis, so food can ease discomfort without treating its cause.
How to eat and drink
Take small sips of water or an oral rehydration drink, especially if vomiting or diarrhoea is also present. Clear broth, diluted juice, or ice chips may be easier than a large drink. Sit upright after eating and avoid lying down immediately. As symptoms settle, add gentle foods such as yoghurt, eggs, chicken, or cooked vegetables in small portions. Keep a note of foods, smells, medicines, and situations that trigger nausea; this can help a clinician look for a pattern.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent medical help if you cannot keep fluids down, vomit blood or material that looks like coffee grounds, have severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, chest pain, or trouble breathing. Prompt assessment is also needed for signs of dehydration such as very little urine, marked dizziness, or unusual sleepiness. Nausea with fever after heat exposure may occur with heat exhaustion, while nausea with yellowing of the skin or eyes needs medical assessment. Arrange a routine appointment if nausea keeps returning, interferes with eating, or begins after a new medicine.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether your symptoms could relate to reflux, infection, a medicine, pregnancy, or another condition, and which fluids are suitable if you are vomiting. Tell the clinician when the nausea began, whether you have pain, fever, diarrhoea, weight loss, or dizziness, and what you have managed to eat and drink.

Questions people ask
Are crackers good for nausea?
Plain crackers or dry toast may be easier to tolerate because they are mild and low in fat. Start with a small amount and stop if they worsen your symptoms.
Should you eat if you feel like vomiting?
Do not force a full meal. Focus on small sips of fluid, then try a few bites of bland food when the stomach feels calmer.
When is nausea more than a food issue?
Repeated nausea, inability to keep fluids down, severe pain, blood in vomit, fainting, confusion, or dehydration signs should be medically assessed.
