Food poisoning with diarrhoea only: what to know

Short answer
Food poisoning can cause diarrhoea without vomiting, fever, nausea, or abdominal pain, but hydration and warning signs still matter.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main risk
- Fluid and salt loss can lead to dehydration.
- Track
- Onset, stool changes, drinking, and urine output.
- First step
- Sip oral rehydration solution regularly.
What diarrhoea alone can mean
Foodborne irritation or infection can speed movement through the intestine, leaving stools loose or watery. A breast? No—diarrhoea alone does not identify the cause, and it can also follow a change in diet, medicine, or another intestinal infection. The pattern matters: note when it began, how often it occurs, whether blood or mucus appears, and whether you can drink and pass urine normally.
Food poisoning is a common presentation of diarrhoea, but diarrhoea is not proof of food poisoning. Recent shared meals, symptoms in other diners, and a sudden onset can help a clinician assess the possibility.
What you can do now
Take frequent small sips of water or an oral rehydration solution; this replaces fluid and salts lost in stool. Continue light foods as tolerated, such as rice, toast, bananas, soup, or yoghurt, and pause alcohol, very fatty meals, and foods that clearly worsen symptoms. Wash hands with soap and water and avoid preparing food for others while unwell.
An oral rehydration therapy service can explain suitable fluid replacement. IV fluid therapy may be considered by a clinician when drinking is not enough or dehydration is significant.
When to seek medical care
Seek urgent help for blood or black stool, severe or worsening abdominal pain, fainting, confusion, very little urine, a dry mouth with inability to keep fluids down, or marked weakness. Contact a clinician promptly if diarrhoea persists, returns repeatedly, follows recent travel or antibiotics, or affects a young child, older adult, pregnant person, or someone with a long-term illness.
Useful questions for a clinician
Could another infection or medicine explain the diarrhoea? How much oral rehydration solution should I take? Do I need testing, and which medicines should I avoid?
