Is food poisoning contagious?

Some food poisoning is contagious, particularly when viruses or certain bacteria leave the body in stool or vomit. Other cases result from toxins in food and do not spread directly between people. Because the cause is often uncertain at home, treat vomiting and diarrhoea as potentially transmissible while symptoms are active.

Tiny particles from vomit or stool can reach hands, bathroom fixtures, surfaces, food, or drink. A person can then swallow the germs. Sharing a bathroom, caring for someone who is ill, and preparing meals for others can increase exposure. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, and fever. The presence of symptoms does not prove that another household member will become ill.

Wash hands with soap and water after toilet use or caregiving and before eating. Clean contaminated surfaces promptly, launder soiled clothing separately, and avoid sharing towels or utensils. Do not prepare meals for other people while vomiting or having diarrhoea. Keep drinking fluids in small amounts; Oral Rehydration Therapy can help replace water and salts lost through the gut.

Seek care for blood in stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, confusion, fainting, very little urine, or inability to drink. A high fever or worsening weakness also warrants assessment. Ask for advice early if the sick person is a baby, older adult, pregnant, or immunocompromised. IV Fluid Therapy may be needed when dehydration is significant.

Ask how long to avoid preparing food for others, whether testing is needed, and which cleaning steps matter most. Tell the clinician when symptoms began, whether a shared meal was involved, and whether anyone else has become unwell.
