Food intolerance lab test: what to know

Short answer
A food intolerance lab test may help investigate selected causes, but no single blood test confirms every type of food intolerance.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Test limits
- A single laboratory result does not cover every food-related reaction.
- Useful preparation
- A detailed symptom and food record helps give results context.
What testing can show
The term food intolerance covers different reactions. Some are related to digestion or the handling of a food component, while others need a symptom-led assessment rather than a laboratory marker. A clinician chooses tests based on your symptoms, medical history, medicines and examination.
A commercial panel may report reactions that do not explain your symptoms. A normal result also does not rule out every food-related problem. Bloating or diarrhoea can arise from infections, bowel conditions, medicines or other dietary factors.
Preparing for assessment
Keep a record of foods, portions, timing and symptoms, and bring a list of medicines and supplements. Ask what the proposed test is designed to detect, whether you need to change your diet beforehand and how the result will affect the plan.
Food Intolerance Testing should be interpreted with your history, not in isolation. If restriction is recommended, Nutrition Counselling can help you maintain a varied diet and plan a supervised reintroduction.
When to seek care
Arrange a review for symptoms that continue, unexplained weight loss, blood in stool, repeated vomiting or difficulty eating enough. Seek urgent care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness or rapidly spreading hives after food.
Questions for your doctor
What does this lab test detect? What other causes should be considered? Should I continue eating the suspected food before testing, and how will we use the result?

Questions people ask
Can a blood test diagnose all food intolerance?
No. Different intolerances need different approaches, and some are assessed mainly through symptoms and supervised diet changes.
Should I buy a home intolerance panel?
Discuss the test with a clinician first, because some panels may not measure a cause of your symptoms and can prompt unnecessary restriction.
