What should you know about food detective intolerance test?

Short answer
A Food Detective intolerance test may provide a result, but it cannot by itself diagnose food intolerance or explain every digestive symptom.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- A panel result is not a diagnosis on its own.
- Useful record
- Note food timing, quantity and symptoms together.
What the result means
Food intolerance describes difficulty digesting or reacting to a food without the same mechanism as a classic immediate allergy. Symptoms can include bloating, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation or nausea, and may have several causes. An at-home panel should be interpreted alongside the timing of symptoms, usual diet, examination and medical history.
A positive antibody result does not automatically prove that a food causes symptoms, while a negative panel does not exclude every intolerance. Allergy testing answers a different clinical question and is used when an immediate allergic reaction is suspected. Irritable bowel syndrome and lactose intolerance can also require targeted assessment.
Safer next steps
Keep a brief food-and-symptom diary that records portions, timing, symptoms and bowel changes. Do not remove many foods for a long period without advice, because restrictive eating can reduce nutrition and make the pattern harder to interpret. A clinician or dietitian may suggest a structured elimination followed by planned reintroduction, with attention to calcium, fibre and protein.
If symptoms follow milk or dairy, ask whether lactose intolerance assessment is appropriate. If symptoms are immediate or involve skin, breathing or swelling, seek allergy-focused advice rather than relying on an intolerance panel.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review for ongoing or worsening symptoms, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, blood in stool, black stool, fever, anaemia or symptoms that wake you repeatedly. Get emergency help for facial or throat swelling, trouble breathing, collapse or a rapidly spreading allergic reaction.
Questions for your doctor
What does this test actually measure? Do my symptoms fit intolerance, allergy or irritable bowel syndrome? Should I have formal allergy testing or another assessment? How can I reintroduce foods without losing important nutrients?

Questions people ask
Can a Food Detective test identify every problem food?
No. It examines selected markers and cannot assess every intolerance or alternative cause of symptoms.
Should I stop eating every food with a positive result?
Discuss the result with a clinician or dietitian before making broad or prolonged exclusions.
