What should you know about a food allergy skin test?

During a skin-prick test, a clinician marks the skin, applies extracts from selected foods, and gently pricks the surface. A raised, itchy area can indicate sensitivity to an ingredient. Sensitivity is not the same as a confirmed food allergy: the clinician compares the finding with what happens when you eat the food and with the timing and pattern of your reactions. A negative result can make an immediate allergy less likely, but it does not explain every food-related symptom.

Testing is usually directed at foods that fit your history rather than a broad panel chosen without context. Medicines such as some antihistamines can affect the skin response, so tell the testing team about every medicine and supplement you use. Do not stop a prescribed medicine unless the clinician gives you clear instructions.

Before the appointment, write down the food, amount, preparation, symptoms, and how soon they began after eating. Bring details of previous reactions, medicines, asthma or eczema, and any emergency treatment you have been prescribed. Wear clothing that allows easy access to the test area. The skin may itch briefly, and the clinician can offer relief after the reading.

Keep eating patterns and avoidance decisions aligned with the clinician’s plan. A positive skin result alone should not lead to removing several foods from your diet, especially for a child.
