What should you know about food allergy profile test?

Short answer
A food allergy profile test can provide clues about sensitivity to selected foods, but your symptoms and medical history determine what the result means.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Best interpretation
- Combine the report with exposure history and symptoms
- Diet advice
- Do not remove tolerated foods without clinical guidance
Understanding a profile result
A profile usually brings several food-related results together for review. The report may identify an immune response, but that finding is not the same as proof that the food causes symptoms when eaten. The clinician considers the food, the amount, the timing, the symptoms, and whether you tolerate it at other times.
Results can be confusing when they do not match your experience. Avoiding foods without guidance can make meals unnecessarily restrictive, so use the report as part of an assessment rather than as a diagnosis by itself.
Making the result useful
Before testing, write down suspected foods, preparation methods, symptoms, and how soon they began. Tell the clinician about medicines, asthma, pregnancy, and previous severe reactions. Afterward, ask which results require action and whether foods you currently tolerate should remain in your diet. Never perform an unsupervised food challenge.
For an overview of clinical assessment, read [Allergy Testing](/treatments/diagnostics-and-screening/allergy-testing/) and [Food Allergy](/conditions/food-allergy/).
Act on symptoms, not the report
A test appointment cannot manage an active reaction. Get immediate emergency help for throat tightness, voice change, breathing trouble, widespread swelling with other symptoms, faintness, confusion, or collapse after food exposure. Follow prescribed emergency instructions while help is coming. [Anaphylaxis](/conditions/anaphylaxis/) requires urgent attention.
Questions for your appointment
What does each part of my profile measure? Which result fits my reaction history? Which foods should I avoid now, if any? How will we review my plan if I have another reaction?

Questions people ask
Is a food allergy profile the same as a diagnosis?
No. It can add information, but diagnosis depends on the complete clinical picture and professional interpretation.
What if I develop an itchy throat after eating?
Stop eating the suspected food and follow your action plan. Worsening throat symptoms, breathing difficulty, or faintness need emergency help. See [Itchy Throat](/symptoms/itchy-throat/).
