What should you know about food allergies that cause sinus problems?

Food allergy may cause nasal or throat symptoms, but ongoing sinus problems more often need assessment for other causes. A food allergy is more plausible when symptoms begin soon after a particular food and include hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing or an itchy throat.

An allergic response can swell nasal tissues and increase secretions, making the nose feel blocked. Sinusitis can cause facial pressure, coloured discharge, reduced smell and symptoms that persist beyond a single meal. Repeated or long-lasting symptoms may fit chronic sinusitis or another nasal condition rather than a food trigger. The timing, associated symptoms and examination are more useful than assuming a food is responsible.

Keep a diary of meals, ingredients, symptom onset, facial discomfort, smell changes and any skin or breathing symptoms. Avoid only a clearly suspected trigger until assessed, and do not rely on broad food restrictions to treat sinus symptoms. A clinician may consider allergy testing and can discuss suitable treatment after checking the nose and sinuses.

Call emergency services for throat or tongue swelling, difficulty breathing, wheezing, faintness or collapse after eating. These symptoms can signal anaphylaxis and require immediate action. Seek prompt medical advice for severe facial pain, swelling around the eye, vision changes, a severe headache, or symptoms that are worsening rather than settling.
