What should you know about follicular thyroid cancer?

The thyroid is a gland at the front of the neck. Follicular cancer develops from follicular cells, which normally help make thyroid hormones. A neck lump, swallowing difficulty, or hoarse voice can lead to assessment, although these symptoms have many possible causes. A diagnosis usually combines examination, ultrasound, needle sampling, and sometimes surgery because the way tumour cells enter nearby vessels or tissue can affect classification.

Doctors consider the tumour’s size, whether it has extended beyond the thyroid, and whether it has reached lymph nodes or distant areas. These details help determine whether surgery alone is appropriate or whether additional treatment is useful.

Treatment may include thyroid removal surgery, with the extent chosen according to the tumour and your health. Some people receive radioactive iodine therapy afterward to target thyroid tissue that remains. Thyroid hormone replacement is often needed when the gland cannot make enough hormone.
