What should you know about follicular pityriasis versicolor?

Pityriasis versicolor occurs when a yeast that normally lives on skin grows more actively. Small patches may be lighter, darker, pink, or tan than nearby skin, with a fine powdery scale. Follicular involvement makes the change appear centred around hairs and can create many small spots rather than one continuous area. It is not the same as a bacterial infection and is not usually spread by ordinary contact.

The upper chest, back, neck, shoulders, and upper arms are common sites. Colour can remain uneven after the yeast is controlled because pigment recovery may lag behind the disappearance of scale. A Skin Rash, Scaly Skin, Dark Patches On Skin, or White Patches On Skin can have other causes, so appearance alone is not always enough for diagnosis.

Keep the skin cool and dry where possible, avoid oily products that aggravate the area, and do not scrub the patches. A clinician may recommend Topical Antifungal Treatment, Medicated Shampoo Treatment used on affected skin, or Oral Antifungal Treatment when the area is extensive or difficult to treat topically. Follow the instructions for contact time and duration, and do not assume that persistent colour means treatment has failed.

Arrange an assessment if patches are spreading quickly, very itchy, painful, wet, crusted, or inflamed, or if the diagnosis is uncertain. Seek review when treatment causes swelling or severe burning, or when the rash returns frequently and needs a prevention plan.
