What should you know about focal duct ectasia?

Duct ectasia can occur when a duct widens and its contents become more concentrated. A person may notice nipple discharge, tenderness near the nipple, a change in the nipple position, or a small area that feels different. Others have no noticeable symptom and learn about the change during imaging. The discharge can vary in colour and consistency; its appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Focal findings are assessed in context because several breast conditions can produce similar changes. The clinician may examine both breasts and the nipple area, then decide whether targeted imaging is needed. A Breast Ultrasound can help show the duct, its contents, and nearby tissue.

Do not repeatedly squeeze the nipple to check for discharge, because this can keep the area irritated. Note whether discharge happens without touching, whether it comes from one opening or several, and whether there is pain, redness, or a skin change. Bring these details and any imaging report to your appointment. Follow the recommended imaging plan and ask when the result will be reviewed. Treatment may be unnecessary when the finding is settled and symptoms are minor; persistent symptoms need an individual plan.

Arrange prompt assessment for new one-sided discharge that occurs without pressure, a new lump, nipple inversion, a persistent skin change, or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent help for a hot, red, very painful breast with fever or feeling acutely unwell, as this can indicate an infection needing treatment.

Ask which duct is affected, whether the finding matches your symptoms, and whether Breast Ultrasound or another test is appropriate. Ask what changes should prompt review, whether the nipple should be left alone, and when you will receive a clear follow-up plan.
