What should you know about fluorescent antibodies flow cytometry?

Each antibody is designed to recognise a particular protein on a cell surface or inside a cell. A fluorescent dye is attached to the antibody. When the prepared sample passes through a laser-based instrument, the dye gives off light that detectors can measure. Using several antibody-and-dye combinations allows the laboratory to build a marker pattern for each cell population.

The pattern may help identify immune-cell types, assess whether cells are immature or mature, and investigate whether an unusual population is present. The result is not interpreted in isolation. The laboratory report is considered with the sample source, blood counts, symptoms, examination findings, and other tests.

Usually, your preparation depends on how the sample is collected rather than on the fluorescent antibodies. Tell the team about current medicines and recent treatment, since these can affect the cells available for analysis. Ask which markers are being tested and what question the panel is intended to answer. If the sample comes from a bone-marrow procedure, follow the separate preparation and wound-care instructions.

The antibody analysis does not itself cause a physical sensation. Contact the care team for problems related to sample collection, such as ongoing bleeding, increasing pain, redness, swelling, drainage, or fever after a procedure. Seek urgent help for severe bleeding, faintness, breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening illness, using the contact route provided by your hospital.

You may ask which markers the antibodies recognise, whether the panel is designed for screening or confirmation, whether the sample contained enough cells, how long interpretation may take, and what other results will be reviewed alongside it.
