What should you know about fluorescence in flow cytometry?

In the laboratory, fluorescent tags are attached to antibodies or other probes that recognise selected cell markers. The sample is carried through a narrow stream so cells pass the laser one at a time. Detectors record the light emitted by each tag, along with information about cell size and internal structure. Software then groups cells according to their pattern of markers.

This pattern can help specialists describe a population of blood or immune cells, distinguish mature cells from immature cells, and investigate an unusual cell population. A flow-cytometry result is interpreted alongside symptoms, blood counts, examination findings, and other laboratory or imaging results. It does not by itself explain every abnormal result.

Ask where the sample will come from, such as blood, fluid, or a bone-marrow sample, and whether any preparation is needed. Make sure the laboratory knows about recent treatment because medicines can change the number and appearance of cells. If a sample is being collected as part of a procedure, follow the preparation and aftercare instructions from that team. Request an explanation of which markers were tested and how they relate to your question.

Fluorescence itself does not cause symptoms because the analysis happens on a collected sample. Seek care according to the procedure used to obtain the sample. After a bone-marrow procedure, contact the clinical team for increasing pain, redness, swelling, drainage, or fever at the site, or for bleeding that does not stop with pressure. Follow the urgent instructions supplied by your clinic.

Ask what cell population is being investigated, which markers will be measured, whether the sample is adequate, how the result will be combined with other tests, and when someone will discuss the report with you.
