Fluconazole for a skin rash: what to know

Skin redness, scaling, itching, or ring-shaped patches can have several causes. Fungal infection is one possibility; eczema, irritation, allergy, bacterial infection, and medicine reactions can look similar. Fluconazole is an oral antifungal medicine, so a clinician may consider it when the suspected fungus is likely to respond and a cream is unsuitable or has not been enough.

The medicine can interact with other treatments and may not be suitable with some liver problems, heart-rhythm concerns, or pregnancy. A new rash after starting fluconazole can be a medicine reaction rather than the infection getting worse.

Have the rash assessed if its appearance, location, or course is uncertain. Use fluconazole only as prescribed, follow the dosing instructions, and do not share capsules. Keep affected skin clean and dry, avoid scratching, and do not add steroid cream unless a clinician recommends it, because steroids can alter the appearance of some fungal infections.

Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, breastfeeding, liver disease, heart-rhythm problems, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you take. If the rash does not improve as expected, contact the prescriber rather than repeating a dose yourself.

Get urgent medical help for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, faintness, blistering, skin peeling, painful widespread redness, sores in the mouth or eyes, or a rash with fever. Contact a clinician promptly for yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, severe weakness, or persistent vomiting while taking fluconazole.
