Flucloxacillin and Heartburn: What Should You Know?

Heartburn during flucloxacillin treatment may be medicine-related or coincidental, so review the symptom without stopping treatment alone. Burning behind the breastbone, an acidic taste or food coming back up can reflect reflux, but severe chest symptoms need urgent assessment.

Antibiotics can upset the digestive system, while heartburn may also arise from acid reflux, gastritis or an ulcer. A hiatus hernia can make reflux easier. The timing of symptoms, whether they follow a dose or meals, and associated pain or vomiting help a clinician decide what is happening. Heartburn does not by itself prove that flucloxacillin is the cause.

Take flucloxacillin exactly as prescribed and check the dispensing instructions about food and drinks, because absorption advice matters for this antibiotic. Do not double a missed dose or share the medicine. Keep a brief record of doses, meals and symptoms. Smaller meals, avoiding lying down soon after eating and raising the head of the bed may reduce reflux. Ask a pharmacist before using an antacid or acid reflux medication, since spacing or interactions may matter.

Get emergency help for crushing or persistent chest pain, breathlessness, fainting, vomiting blood, black stools, facial swelling or difficulty breathing. Contact the prescriber promptly for severe or worsening burning, repeated vomiting, painful swallowing, a rash, or significant diarrhoea. Do not stop an antibiotic early unless a clinician tells you to, except when emergency help directs otherwise.
