Flucloxacillin for insect bites

Many bites cause a local itchy, swollen response that settles with time and does not need an antibiotic. Scratching can break the skin and allow bacteria to enter. Increasing warmth, tenderness, pus, spreading redness, or worsening swelling may indicate infection, but these signs need an examination rather than self-diagnosis. Flucloxacillin targets certain bacteria and will not remove the original itch or allergic response.

Tell the prescriber about medicine allergies, pregnancy, liver disease, and other medicines. Possible effects include stomach upset or loose stools. Facial swelling, wheezing, breathing difficulty, or a rapidly spreading rash after a dose needs urgent help.

Gently wash the area, keep nails short, and avoid scratching or squeezing it. A cool compress can ease discomfort. An antihistamine treatment may help an itchy bite reaction, while topical corticosteroids may be considered by a clinician for selected inflammation; neither replaces antibiotics when a bacterial infection is present. If flucloxacillin is prescribed, take it according to the label and complete the course unless told otherwise.

Seek same-day medical advice for rapidly expanding redness, severe pain, pus, red streaks, fever, or feeling faint or very unwell. Get urgent help for swelling of the lips or tongue, breathing trouble, confusion, or a bite near the eye with worsening swelling. A dark mark can remain after inflammation; this is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
