What should you know about flucloxacillin for eczema?

Atopic Dermatitis can cause dry, itchy, cracked, inflamed skin without infection. Bacterial infection becomes more concerning when the affected area develops new crusting, pus, increasing warmth, tenderness, swelling, or redness that spreads. Crusting Skin and Cracked Skin can therefore be useful clues, but they do not confirm the cause on their own.

A clinician may prescribe flucloxacillin after examining the skin and considering the extent of infection and your medical history. Antibiotics will not replace moisturiser, prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment, or trigger avoidance for eczema.

Continue the eczema plan provided by your clinician unless they tell you to change it. Apply a suitable moisturiser regularly, wash gently, keep nails short, and avoid scratching. Do not pick crusts or use leftover antibiotics, antiseptics, or steroid combinations without advice.

If flucloxacillin is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and mention penicillin allergy, pregnancy, liver problems, and other medicines. Ask what to do if a dose is missed or if the skin is not improving.

Seek urgent help if redness spreads quickly, pain is severe, fever comes with marked illness, the eye area swells, or you develop breathing trouble, facial swelling, blistering, or skin peeling after a dose. Arrange prompt review for increasing oozing, pus, worsening tenderness, or eczema that is suddenly much more painful.

Ask what signs suggest infection rather than an eczema flare, whether your eczema medicines should continue, how long to monitor the response, and how to prevent repeated skin cracking.
