Short answer

Flu vaccination in children trains the immune system to recognise influenza and can reduce the chance of serious flu illness.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What vaccination does

A flu vaccine presents the immune system with information that prepares it to respond to influenza. Protection develops after vaccination and is updated because circulating flu viruses can change. Vaccination does not treat flu that a child already has, and a vaccinated child can still develop another respiratory infection.

Children may have a sore arm, tenderness, mild temperature, or feel tired for a short time after an injection. These reactions usually settle without special treatment. A serious allergic reaction is uncommon but needs immediate medical attention.

Planning the vaccination

Ask the child's clinician or vaccination service which vaccine is recommended, whether more than one dose is needed, and when protection should begin. Tell them about previous vaccine reactions, severe allergies, immune problems, current medicines, and any illness on the day. Keep the child's routine vaccinations recorded and follow the local schedule offered to your family.

After vaccination, offer fluids and let the child rest if needed. Use fever or pain medicine only as advised for the child's age and health.

When to seek care

Call emergency services for breathing difficulty, facial swelling, widespread hives, collapse, or a child who becomes unusually floppy or difficult to wake soon after vaccination. Contact the child's clinician for a persistent or concerning reaction, worsening illness, or symptoms that do not fit the expected local soreness and tiredness.

Questions to ask

Which flu vaccine is suitable for my child? Does my child need another dose? What should I do if my child has a cold on vaccination day? Which reaction is expected, and when should I call?

Questions people ask

Can flu vaccination give a child flu?

The vaccine cannot cause influenza, although a child may have short-lived soreness, tiredness, or a mild temperature afterward.

Can a vaccinated child still catch flu?

Yes. Protection is not complete, and the child may also have an illness caused by another virus.
