Flu symptoms without a runny nose

A clear nose does not rule out influenza. Flu often affects the whole body and lower airways more strongly than the nose, so a person may mainly notice marked tiredness, muscle aches, headache, dry cough, sore throat, chills, or fever. Symptoms overlap with COVID-19 and the common cold, and symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the virus.

A runny nose is more typical of some colds and allergies, while sinusitis may bring facial pressure or thick nasal discharge. Allergic rhinitis, pet allergy, or house dust mite allergy often cause sneezing and itchy eyes alongside nasal symptoms. These patterns are clues, not a diagnosis.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and use simple comfort measures for a sore throat or blocked feeling. Stay home from close contact while you feel unwell, improve ventilation, and consider a suitable test if a clinician or local guidance recommends one. Ask a pharmacist or clinician before taking medicines, especially if you are pregnant, have a long-term condition, or take other medicines.

Contact a clinician early if symptoms began recently and you are at higher risk of severe illness; antiviral treatment may be time-sensitive for some people. Do not use antibiotics unless prescribed for a bacterial problem.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or a child who is unusually difficult to wake. Arrange medical advice if symptoms are worsening, improve and then return sharply, or you cannot keep fluids down. A clinician can assess your examination findings and decide whether testing or treatment is needed.
