Flu-like symptoms but no fever

Body aches, tiredness, headache, chills, a sore throat, cough, or a blocked nose do not all require fever. A common cold often causes nose and throat symptoms, while acute bronchitis can bring a persistent cough and chest discomfort. COVID-19 may also present with respiratory symptoms without a measured fever. Symptoms can overlap, so one sign cannot identify the cause.

Check your temperature again if you feel hot or shivery, using the same reliable method. Consider recent contact with illness, travel, new medicines, allergies, and whether symptoms are improving or worsening.

Rest, drink fluids regularly, and choose easy-to-digest food if your appetite is low. Saline nasal spray, warm drinks, and honey for adults and children over one year may soothe irritation. Follow label directions for any pain or cough medicine, and avoid doubling ingredients in combination cold products. Stay home from close contact while you feel unwell and improve ventilation around others.

Arrange medical advice if symptoms are severe, keep worsening, fail to improve, or return after improving. Seek urgent help for difficult breathing, chest pain, new confusion, fainting, blue or grey lips, severe dehydration, or unusual drowsiness. Babies, older adults, pregnant people, and people with long-term conditions may need earlier assessment.
