Flu-like symptoms and chikungunya

Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne viral infection. Many people develop a sudden fever with prominent joint pain, muscle aches, headache, rash, or fatigue. Joint discomfort can affect hands, wrists, ankles, or feet and may continue after the fever settles. These symptoms overlap with other infections, so symptoms alone cannot identify the cause. Recent travel or residence in an area where mosquito-borne illness occurs is useful information for a clinician.

Rest, drink frequently, and use light clothing or a cool room if fever makes you uncomfortable. Paracetamol may help pain or fever when taken according to the label and your health circumstances. Avoid aspirin or anti-inflammatory medicines until a clinician has considered dengue or another condition, particularly if there is bleeding, stomach pain, or easy bruising. Prevent further mosquito bites by using repellent, covering skin, and using screens or nets, because mosquitoes can acquire the virus from an infected person.

Arrange a GP Consultation promptly after relevant travel if you develop fever with severe joint pain, a rash, or marked weakness. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, confusion, fainting, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, bleeding, inability to drink, or very little urine. A clinician may decide whether examination or testing is appropriate and can distinguish chikungunya from other causes of a feverish illness.
