Flu and tetanus shots together: what should you know?

The two vaccines prevent different infections and are not the same product. A flu vaccine trains protection against influenza, while tetanus vaccination helps prevent tetanus, a serious illness linked to toxins made by certain bacteria. Tetanus protection may be considered after a wound according to the wound type and your vaccination history. A clinician will check which flu product is suitable, whether a tetanus booster is due, and whether past reactions or health conditions change the plan.

Tell the vaccinator about previous vaccine reactions, allergies, pregnancy, immune problems, current illness and all medicines. Wear clothing that allows access to both upper arms. After vaccination, remain where staff can observe you for the period they recommend. Soreness, redness, tiredness or a mild fever can occur and usually settle without special treatment. Flu vaccination cannot cause influenza, and neither vaccine treats an illness that is already developing.

Seek emergency help for trouble breathing, swelling of the face or throat, widespread hives, collapse or severe dizziness after vaccination. Contact a clinician for a reaction that is worsening, lasts longer than expected, or concerns you. If the vaccines are being considered after an injury, urgent wound assessment may also be needed, especially for a deep, dirty or puncture wound or an uncertain vaccination history.
