What should you know about flu and laryngitis?

Laryngitis is inflammation of the larynx, the part of the throat that contains the vocal cords. A viral respiratory infection such as flu may make the cords swollen, so the voice sounds rough, weak or breathy. Coughing, post-nasal mucus and dry air can add irritation. Acid reflux can also inflame the larynx, while a common cold may cause similar symptoms. Hoarseness and a sore throat often occur together, but the voice change is the clue that the larynx is involved.

Rest your voice and use a comfortable speaking volume; whispering can strain the vocal cords. Drink fluids regularly, choose warm or soothing drinks if they feel helpful, and use humidified air. Avoid smoking, vaping and smoky rooms. Treat fever or aches only with medicines suitable for you and follow the label. Do not start antibiotics unless a clinician has prescribed them, because they do not treat viral flu or viral laryngitis.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, blue lips, severe weakness or confusion. Arrange a GP consultation if symptoms are worsening, dehydration is developing, fever is persistent, or the voice remains markedly hoarse after the respiratory illness has improved. A clinician can examine your throat, voice and breathing and consider another cause when the pattern does not fit a short viral illness.
