Flu and itchy eyes: what should you know?

Flu can bring tired, watery, mildly irritated eyes alongside fever, cough, aches, and feeling unwell. Marked itching, repeated sneezing, a clear runny nose, and symptoms affecting both eyes are more typical of an allergic pattern. Allergic Conjunctivitis can make the whites of the eyes red and produce stringy tears; Allergic Rhinitis may add nasal blockage. House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy can trigger symptoms after exposure. Itchy Eyes alone cannot establish the cause, and infection and allergy can occur together. Thick discharge, eyelid swelling, or a painful light-sensitive eye deserves a different assessment.

Do not rub your eyes, as rubbing can increase swelling and scratch the surface. Wash your hands, use a cool clean compress, and rinse away visible irritants with suitable sterile eyewash if advised. Avoid sharing towels, cosmetics, or eye drops. Reduce exposure to smoke, dust, and known triggers; wash your face and change clothes after outdoor exposure. Remove contact lenses while eyes are red or uncomfortable and seek advice before wearing them again.

Seek urgent eye care for severe pain, sudden vision change, marked light sensitivity, an injury, chemical exposure, or swelling that affects breathing. Arrange prompt assessment for one very red painful eye, worsening eyelid swelling, pus-like discharge, or symptoms in a contact-lens wearer. Review is also sensible when eye irritation persists, repeatedly returns, or occurs with a high fever or significant illness. Do not delay care because itching resembles an allergy if the eye is painful or vision is affected.

Ask whether the pattern fits viral irritation, allergy, or another eye problem; whether you should pause contact lenses; and which drops are safe. Describe one-eye or two-eye involvement, discharge, pain, light sensitivity, vision changes, fever, and recent exposures.
