Cells pass through a laser-based instrument while signals from their size, internal structure, and fluorescent labels are recorded. A computer applies a selected gate, meaning a rule for recognising cells with a particular signal pattern. The instrument then directs droplets containing chosen cells into separate containers. Cells that do not match the rule can be directed elsewhere.

Sorting is a laboratory technique, not a treatment performed inside the body. It can support research, specialised testing, or preparation of a cell population for another laboratory method. The usefulness of a sorted sample depends on the starting material, marker panel, cell health, and the question being asked.

If your sample is being sorted, ask whether the procedure needs blood, marrow, or another specimen and whether collection has special timing requirements. You may not notice anything different from the sample collection itself. Ask how the sorted cells will be used and whether the sorting result will be reported separately from the diagnostic interpretation.

Bring relevant previous reports and mention recent treatment or transfusion history. These details can help the team understand the sample. A clinician should explain how the sorter findings fit with microscopy, blood tests, or tissue results rather than relying on the sorting readout alone.

The sorting instrument is outside the body, so urgent symptoms would generally relate to specimen collection or the underlying illness. Get prompt help for heavy bleeding, fainting, severe pain, breathing difficulty, or fever after collection. Report increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or drainage from a collection site.
