What should you know about flow cytometry of bone marrow?

Bone marrow contains developing blood cells at different stages. In the laboratory, cells from a marrow sample are placed in suspension and exposed to labelled antibodies. As cells pass through the instrument, light signals provide information about their size, complexity, and selected surface or internal markers. The pattern can help separate blood-cell lineages and highlight a population that needs further evaluation.

A flow result is one part of marrow assessment. The amount and quality of the sample, blood mixed into it, treatment already received, and the number of cells available can influence what is seen. Doctors may also use the marrow appearance under a microscope, chromosome or molecular testing, blood counts, and imaging.

Ask whether the sample was adequate and which cell population the laboratory evaluated. Request an explanation of terms such as marker, clone, blast, or residual disease in the context of your report.
