Flow cytometry in hematology

Hematology uses flow cytometry to examine mixed cell populations. Marker combinations can help a specialist recognise broad maturation stages and identify a population that behaves differently from surrounding cells. This may support evaluation of unexplained blood-count changes, enlarged lymph nodes, or a suspected leukemia or lymphoma.

The test works best as one part of a diagnostic picture. A hematologist may compare the flow result with a blood film, complete blood count, chemistry tests, imaging, chromosome or molecular findings, and tissue or bone marrow examination. The report may therefore describe a pattern without naming a final condition.

Bring earlier blood reports, pathology reports, scan results, and a current medicine list. Tell the team about bleeding problems, recent infections, transfusions, and previous cancer or immune treatment. Ask where the sample will come from and whether the collection has separate preparation instructions.

At the results visit, ask which cell population was examined and whether the pattern is reactive, suspicious, or diagnostic in the context of your other findings. Clarify whether more tissue, molecular testing, or a repeat sample is planned.

Get urgent medical help for uncontrolled bleeding, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, or fever with a rapidly worsening condition. Contact your clinic promptly for new bruising with bleeding, marked weakness, or worsening pain and swelling after a procedure. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether the flow-cytometry report is ready.
