What should you know about flow cytometry companies?

A manufacturer may supply the flow cytometer, lasers, detectors, sample-handling parts and analysis software. Other companies produce antibodies linked to fluorescent dyes or provide prepared testing panels. These products support the laboratory workflow, but they do not replace professional validation or clinical interpretation.

Your result comes from the laboratory that received and processed your sample. Staff select a panel for the clinical question, check instrument performance, compare controls and review the cell pattern. Different platforms can use different names for channels or panels, so the brand printed on a report is not the diagnosis.

Ask which laboratory performs the test, whether the panel matches the question being investigated and who will explain the result. Confirm how the sample must be transported and whether the laboratory needs fresh material. If a bone-marrow biopsy is planned, ask how the sample will be divided between flow cytometry and other pathology tests.

You can ask for the report's marker list, the specimen type and any stated limitations. A reliable clinical service should be able to explain its process in understandable language and tell you whether an additional sample or test is needed.

Do not wait for a laboratory company or test result if you develop severe breathlessness, fainting, uncontrolled bleeding, sudden confusion or a high fever with significant weakness. Contact the treating team promptly for repeated fever, unusual bruising, worsening infections or a sudden change in your condition. The testing provider cannot assess symptoms remotely; urgent symptoms need clinical care.

Which laboratory is processing my sample? What question is the selected panel intended to answer? Does the instrument platform affect the interpretation? Who reviews the result with the pathology findings? If the report is inconclusive, what sample or test comes next?
