Flow Cytometry and Antibodies

Short answer
In flow cytometry, laboratory antibodies attach to selected cell markers so an instrument can detect and compare cell populations in a sample.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Marker
- An antibody can bind a selected protein on or inside a cell.
- Signal
- A fluorescent tag lets the instrument detect the bound marker.
What it means
The laboratory chooses antibodies that recognise particular proteins. Each is paired with a fluorescent tag and mixed with prepared cells. When cells pass through a laser, the instrument detects fluorescent signals. A combination of markers creates a profile rather than relying on one signal. This can help distinguish cell groups that look similar under a microscope, including different white blood cell populations. Marker results are interpreted as part of the full clinical picture, not as a diagnosis in isolation.
What to do
Ask whether the antibody panel is designed for screening, classification, treatment monitoring, or another purpose. Tell the team about recent treatment when requested. A report may describe detected or absent markers, intensity, and patterns across cells. Read it with the clinician who ordered it; unfamiliar marker names do not indicate a diagnosis without explanation. Learn more through [Flow Cytometry](/technology/flow-cytometry/).
When to seek care
Report persistent bleeding, spreading redness, marked swelling, fever, or pain that is getting worse after collection. If the sample followed a bone marrow procedure, follow the dressing and activity advice you were given. Get emergency help for collapse, severe weakness, chest pressure, or difficulty breathing.
Questions for your doctor
Which markers are being tested, and what question is the panel intended to answer? Ask whether the result needs correlation with a smear, biopsy, imaging, or another laboratory method. You can also ask how an antibody result might change the next step and whether a [Bone Marrow Biopsy](/treatments/diagnostics-and-staging/bone-marrow-biopsy/) is relevant.
Questions people ask
Are the antibodies given as a treatment?
For this test, they are laboratory reagents used to label cell markers; they are not administered as cancer treatment.
Why are several antibodies used?
A marker combination gives a more informative cell profile than a single marker can provide.
