What should you know about a flow-based spirometer?

You breathe through a mouthpiece while the device records airflow and the volume moved. The reading can help a clinician assess how easily air leaves your lungs and whether the pattern suggests narrowed or restricted breathing. One reading is not a diagnosis by itself; technique, tiredness, recent illness and medicines can affect it.

Follow the instructions from the clinic about medicines, meals and exercise before testing. Sit or stand as directed, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and follow the instruction to inhale and then breathe out with a strong, steady effort. Several attempts may be needed so the clinician can compare repeatable results. Do not share a mouthpiece unless it has been cleaned or replaced.

Contact a clinician promptly if breathing becomes more difficult after the test, or if you develop chest pain, faintness, blue or grey lips, confusion, or severe breathlessness. Seek emergency help for sudden severe breathing difficulty or inability to speak in full sentences.

Ask what each measurement means for you, whether you need repeat testing, and whether any inhaler or other medicine should be paused before the appointment. Ask how your result fits with your symptoms and examination.
