What should you know about florid LCIS?

LCIS begins in the milk-producing lobules. In florid LCIS, the abnormal cells fill and expand lobular units more extensively than classic LCIS. It is often found from tissue removed for another breast concern rather than from a symptom caused by the cells themselves. The finding can occur in either breast and is associated with an increased future risk of invasive breast cancer in both breasts.

The report may describe the extent, whether the cells show necrosis, and whether the sample was obtained with a needle or surgical procedure. Imaging and the amount of tissue sampled help determine whether the pathology finding fully explains the abnormal area.

Arrange a review with a breast specialist who can match the pathology to your imaging and examination. Ask whether the tissue has been reviewed by another pathologist, whether further tissue removal is advised, and which surveillance schedule fits your risk profile. The discussion may include risk-reducing endocrine therapy, enhanced imaging, lifestyle factors, and family history. Decisions should reflect your preferences, other health conditions, and whether you are taking medicines that affect treatment choices.

Contact your breast team for a new lump, nipple or skin change, unusual discharge, or a change at the biopsy or surgical site. After a procedure, report increasing redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or bleeding. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, fainting, severe breathlessness, or sudden severe pain. A breast symptom needs assessment and does not by itself establish cancer.

Ask whether the report is classic or florid LCIS, what features were seen, whether imaging and pathology agree, whether more tissue is needed, how often follow-up is recommended, and whether endocrine risk reduction is suitable for you.
