What should you know about a flexible intramedullary nail?

The nail sits within the hollow central canal of a long bone. Its flexibility lets it press gently against the inner bone and share load while the fracture heals. Surgeons often consider this method for selected fractures in children or for bones and fracture patterns where a flexible implant can provide suitable stability. It is different from a rigid nail and from plates or screws fixed along the outside of bone.

Keep the wound clean and follow the weight-bearing limits set by the surgical team. Use crutches, a cast or a brace exactly as directed, and attend imaging and follow-up appointments so alignment and healing can be checked. Physiotherapy may restore joint movement, strength and walking confidence. Do not return to sport, climbing or impact activity merely because pain has eased. Hardware may remain in place or be removed later if it irritates nearby tissue; that decision depends on healing and symptoms.

Contact the surgical team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, worsening swelling, pain that is not controlled, or a new rubbing sensation over the implant. Seek urgent help for a cold or pale limb, severe tight swelling, new numbness, inability to move the fingers or toes, or sudden breathing difficulty. These signs can signal a circulation problem, infection, pressure injury or a clot-related emergency.

Ask why this implant suits the fracture, how much weight the limb can take, when physiotherapy starts, what healing will be checked, and whether later removal is expected.
