What should you know about flex support compression garments?

After cancer treatment, lymph fluid can collect in an arm, leg, breast or another area. A compression garment supports the tissues and can help limit fluid build-up during movement and daily activity. Flexibility, fabric, length and pressure vary between products. The right choice depends on the body area, skin condition, swelling pattern, strength and ability to put it on.

Have the garment measured and fitted rather than choosing a size by guesswork. Put it on with smooth fabric and no folds, and check that fingers or toes remain their usual colour and warmth. Follow the advised wearing schedule, wash it as directed and replace it when it loses shape. Skin care, gentle movement and the wider lymphoedema plan may be needed alongside compression.

Remove the garment and contact your clinician if it causes increasing pain, numbness, tingling, marked redness, new blisters or a cold or pale hand or foot. Seek urgent care for sudden swelling with chest pain or breathlessness, or for rapidly spreading redness with fever. Do not force a garment over damaged skin or an unexplained new swelling.

Ask who should fit the garment, how long to wear it, how to check the pressure, and whether you need a different design for exercise or sleep. Ask for help practising application if hand movement is difficult.
