What should you know about flaky rash on face?

A flaky rash on the face can come from irritation, dermatitis, infection, heat, or psoriasis, so its pattern and timing matter. Atopic Dermatitis often presents with itch and dry inflamed skin. Contact Dermatitis may follow a new cosmetic, cleanser, hair product, or metal. A ring-shaped expanding rash can be Ringworm, while Heat Rash tends to affect areas that become hot and sweaty.

Ask what changed before the rash appeared and whether it burns or itches. A rash limited to a product-contact area supports Contact Dermatitis. Thick, recurring scale may occur with Psoriasis. Rash in a skin fold can be Intertrigo, especially with moisture and friction. A new medicine can cause a Drug Rash, sometimes beyond the face. Scabies can cause intense itch and may affect close contacts, but facial involvement varies with age and circumstances. These clues guide evaluation; they do not replace it.

Cleanse with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free product, then apply a plain moisturiser. Stop recently introduced cosmetics and avoid scrubs, exfoliating acids, and fragranced oils until the cause is clearer. Keep sweaty areas cool and dry without rubbing. Do not apply leftover steroid, antifungal, or antibiotic cream to the face without advice, because the wrong product can mask or worsen some rashes.

Seek prompt help for facial swelling, eye or mouth involvement, breathing difficulty, widespread blistering, fever, or rapidly spreading redness. Arrange an appointment when the rash is painful, oozing, recurrent, or not settling after triggers are removed. A medicine-related rash deserves timely advice, particularly if there are mouth sores or other body symptoms.
