Short answer

Fixing burnout starts with reducing the pressures that sustain it, protecting sleep and recovery time, and getting support for symptoms that persist or impair daily life.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

A useful starting point
Reduce the demand that is causing the greatest strain and ask for specific practical support.
Track changes
Note sleep, energy, mood, concentration and ability to complete daily tasks.

How burnout can affect you

Burnout can involve emotional or physical exhaustion, growing distance from work, reduced motivation and a sense that tasks are harder to manage. Fatigue, irritability, difficulty concentrating, anxiety and loss of libido may accompany it. Sleep may become unrefreshing or difficult, and insomnia can then make daytime coping harder.

Burnout is not a personal failure. Similar symptoms can also occur with depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, anaemia or other health problems, so a clinician can help separate overlapping causes.

Steps that support recovery

Start by naming the demands that cannot continue at the current pace. Discuss workload, deadlines, leave, staffing or boundaries with a trusted manager, occupational health professional or support person. Protect a wind-down period, regular meals, gentle movement and time away from work messages.

Choose a small routine you can repeat, such as a brief walk, a consistent wake time or one restorative activity. Avoid using alcohol or non-prescribed medicines to force sleep. Book a medical appointment if symptoms continue, your functioning is falling, or you cannot make changes without support.

When to seek urgent help

Seek urgent help if you feel unable to keep yourself safe, have thoughts of suicide, cannot care for basic needs, or are experiencing severe confusion or loss of contact with reality. Arrange prompt care for persistent inability to sleep, panic that is escalating, or exhaustion that makes driving or safety-sensitive work unsafe.

Questions for your doctor

Could another health problem or sleep disorder be adding to my exhaustion? What support is available for anxiety, concentration or insomnia? How can I plan time away from work and decide when it is safe to resume usual demands?

Rest may help, but recovery usually also requires addressing the ongoing workload or stressor and treating related sleep or mental health symptoms.

Should I see a doctor for burnout?

Yes, especially when symptoms persist, affect work or relationships, or overlap with depression, anxiety, insomnia or another medical problem.
