Short answer

Fixing IT band syndrome usually requires reducing irritating activity, improving hip and leg control, and gradually rebuilding tolerance for running or sport.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical area
The outer side of the knee
Rehabilitation targets
Training load, hip strength and movement control

What is happening

The iliotibial band is a strong strip of connective tissue along the outer thigh. Repeated knee bending, especially during running or cycling, can irritate tissues around the outer knee. Pain often appears after activity begins and may worsen with hills, speed or repeated stairs. Knee Pain can arise from many conditions, so an examination is useful if the location or pattern is unusual.

Ways to settle symptoms

Temporarily reduce the distance, speed, hills or training frequency that trigger pain, while keeping comfortable low-impact movement if suitable. A physiotherapist may assess hip strength, leg alignment, foot control and running technique, then prescribe progressive exercises. Gait Retraining can address movement habits; Sports Massage may help selected soft-tissue symptoms but does not correct the training load. A Cortisone Injection may be discussed when pain remains limiting after conservative care.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment if pain causes limping, swelling, locking, giving way or difficulty with ordinary walking. Seek urgent care after a major injury, or if the knee is hot and very swollen, you have fever, or the leg becomes numb or cold. Persistent outer-knee pain deserves review when changing activity has not helped.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether the pain fits IT band syndrome, which training factors should change, and which hip or leg exercises are appropriate. Discuss how to progress running and whether another knee problem needs to be excluded before an injection.

Questions people ask

Should you stop all exercise with IT band syndrome?

Not always. Reduce the provoking load and choose comfortable activity while the cause and rehabilitation plan are assessed.

Will stretching alone fix IT band syndrome?

Stretching may be included, but recovery usually also considers strength, movement control and the activity load.
